As a wealthy Swedish family celebrates the birthday of their patriarch (Erland Josephson, graves and whiskers), III. News about the outbreak of World War II get to their distant Baltic Island – and the happy mood becomes horror. The family descends into a state of psychological destruction, which brilliantly causes Tarkovsky’s arresting bright gray palette washed over the dark landscape around their house.
